Since 1988 the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry has been located at 46-48 Tchaikovskogo str. In the mansion of the Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna Romanova, who was the younger sister of Nicolas II. The mansion designed by the architect Harald Bosse, initially belonged to the noble family of the Dukes Baryatinskiy. The Baryatinskiys were an ancient noble family of Russia whose roots can be traced back to the sons of Ruric. Several members of the Baryatinsky family served as Ambassadors to European and Asian countries and were renowned military commanders.
From 1837 the palace was build and rebuild over the course of several decades and by 1880 it looked very much as it does today, with a solemn extended façade built in the “second” rococo style, an enfilade of gala rooms on the first floor along Tchaikovskogo str. (formerly Sergiyevskaya street) and two enfilades in the East and West transversal buildings.
Nicolas II presented the mansion to his younger sister as a gift for her wedding with the Duke Petr Alexandrovich of Oldenburg.
After 1917 numerous organizations were assigned to the building. In 1988 the St. Petersburg CCI moved into the building, by that time much of the interior of the original building had been lost or damaged. Restoration of the palace halls began in 1989 under the aegis of the Chamber. The main building of the palace now presents a suite of magnificent halls and rooms which are all of great artistic value.
By the Order of the President of the Russian Federation dated February 20, 1995, the palace which is still named the “Baryatinskiye’s Mansion”, was included on the list of objects of historical and cultural heritage of federal significance.
